Quality and Accreditation

The Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory (TBSSDL) hired a Quality Manager and began the development of a comprehensive quality system in October 2007. Efforts are in progress to reach ISO 17025 standards of operation, which are the foundation of the accreditation standards of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). The goal is to be an AAVLD fully accredited laboratory by 2010.

Mission Statement of the Quality System

The Thompson Bishop Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory (TBSSDL) recognizes its responsibility as a provider of quality services.  To this end, the laboratory has developed and documented a quality management system to better satisfy the needs of its customers and to improve management of the organization.   State diagnostic services have been available in Alabama since 1947. The TBSSDL opened in 2006 and continues the primary objective to serve animal health in the State of Alabama

The mission of the TBSSDL is to assist our clients in the detection and understanding of animal and apiary diseases.  The laboratory strives to provide high quality diagnostic and consultative services to the livestock and poultry industries, the veterinary profession, wildlife services, apiary and aquatic animal industries, and other animal owners in Alabama.  The laboratory also provides information regarding disease occurrence for public health agencies, federal and state regulatory officials, and the animal industries.

The quality system of TBSSDL comprises all of the policies in a Quality Manual and referenced procedures and documents.  This system was established to guide the staff in the performance of good laboratory practices and the production of quality outputs.  The requirements of the quality system apply to all technical work of the laboratory.

The laboratory intends to provide clients or other concerned parties with the highest quality services and data and is committed to meeting or exceeding the client’s expectation.  Each employee has a role in the quality of the laboratory’s work and has a responsibility for its implementation according to his/her technical and/or managerial responsibilities.

Concerns about the Quality of Laboratory Services and Data

Nonconformance of laboratory services and data is taken seriously whether reported by a client or detected in-house. Nonconformance is documented at individual work stations and regularly reviewed for preventive and corrective actions. When registering a concern about laboratory, please provide specific information about the issue, including the case number, date, and time, etc. so that the problem can be investigated. The Quality Manager can be contacted directly by phone (334-844-7250) or email (farmekr@vetmed.auburn.edu).
